Ever reach the end of December and think, “What even happened in my business this year?”
You’re not alone.
As moms running businesses in the margins of school drop-off, nap schedules, homework meltdowns, and client calls… it’s easy to spend an entire year jumping from task to task, launch to launch, without pausing long enough to reflect on whether any of it is actually working.
That’s why an annual business review is one of the most powerful rituals you can build into your CEO rhythm.
Not to judge yourself.
Not to dwell on what didn’t get done.
But to zoom out, reconnect with your goals, and make strategic decisions that support the season of motherhood you’re in right now.
In this episode, I’m walking you through my exact five-step annual business review ritual — the same process I use every year to plan, simplify, and grow my business in a way that feels both sustainable and aligned.
Let’s dive in.
Why Every Mom Entrepreneur Needs an Annual Business Review
Here’s the truth: most entrepreneurs — especially mom entrepreneurs — are running so fast that we don’t pause to look at the big picture.
We’re juggling client work, podcast episodes, school schedules, content creation, and the invisible load of keeping a household running. Before we know it, another year has flown by, and we’re left wondering:
-
What worked?
-
What didn’t?
-
Where did my clients actually come from?
-
What drained my time, energy, or profits?
-
And most importantly… how do I make next year feel lighter?
This is where an annual business review becomes transformational.
It gives you clarity.
It gives you direction.
It puts you back in the driver’s seat.
And it ensures that your business is still working for you — not the other way around.
My 5-Step Annual Business Review Ritual
This process isn’t complicated, but it is powerful. I set aside half a day in mid-December (though you can do it anytime), grab a drink, open a fresh Google Doc, and walk through these five steps:
1. Reflect: What Actually Happened This Year?
The first part of your annual business review is all about reflection.
Ask yourself:
-
What were my biggest wins — personally and professionally?
-
What am I most proud of?
-
Which lessons did I learn (even the hard ones)?
-
What can I celebrate that I haven’t acknowledged yet?
I physically scroll through my calendar, client projects, and task manager during this step because let’s be honest… mom brain is real. We forget how much we’ve done.
Reflection isn’t about perfection.
It’s about awareness.
Celebration fuels momentum — and this step starts you off in a grounded, empowered place.
2. Review: Look at the Real Data
This is where your annual business review gets analytical.
I pull numbers from across my business, including:
-
Revenue by offer
-
Profit margins
-
Email list growth
-
Podcast analytics
-
Client retention
-
Marketing performance
-
Where my best clients actually came from
-
Time spent vs. results created
And then I ask:
-
What offers made the most money?
-
What took the most energy?
-
Which marketing channels worked… and which didn’t?
-
Where am I wasting time?
-
What tasks drained me?
This part is eye-opening — you’ll see where to double down and where to let go.
3. Refine: Align Your Business With Your Current Season
Once you know what worked and what didn’t, it’s time to refine.
This is where I get honest about whether my business still aligns with my long-term goals and my current season of motherhood.
Questions to ask during your annual business review:
-
Are my offers still aligned with where I want to go?
-
Do my prices reflect the value and time I give?
-
Does my current schedule still work for me as a mom?
-
Where can I simplify?
-
What needs to be retired or refreshed?
For me, refinement often looks like:
-
Fewer, more aligned offers
-
Streamlined systems
-
Removing unnecessary tasks
-
Simplifying my client processes
-
Tightening my marketing strategy
Refinement is all about building a business that supports your life — not one that constantly competes with it.
4. Reset: Create Space for the New Year
This step is about resetting your digital and mental space.
I clean up:
-
My ClickUp or Airtable dashboards
-
Digital folders and files
-
My inbox
-
Automations and workflows
-
My weekly schedule and CEO time blocks
Then I ask myself:
How do I want my weeks to feel next year?
Because sustainable success is not about doing more.
It’s about doing the right things — in a way that supports your energy, your family, and your goals.
This is also where I choose a word of the year. In 2025, mine was momentum — and it guided my decisions all year long.
5. Reignite: Reconnect With Your Bigger Vision
This is my favorite part of my annual business review ritual.
Once everything has been reflected on, reviewed, refined, and reset… it’s time to reconnect with your why.
I visualize:
-
How much I want to earn
-
How many hours I want to work
-
How I want my business to feel
-
What kind of impact I want to make
-
What I want family life to look like alongside all of this
This step isn’t about hustle — it’s about alignment.
When you’re clear on what matters most, you stop chasing shiny objects and start building a business that truly supports your life.
How My Annual Business Review Changed My Business
Since I started doing this ritual, everything shifted.
Instead of reacting to tasks, opportunities, or problems, I proactively shape my year.
I’ve caught patterns like:
-
Taking on too many custom projects
-
Underpricing certain offers
-
Overcomplicating my marketing
-
Spending too much time on tasks that didn’t matter
-
Underestimating the revenue from digital products
Your annual business review becomes your compass — helping you make smarter, simpler decisions that support your goals and your capacity as a mom.
Your Action Step: Plan Your Own Annual Business Review
Before the year wraps up, block off 2–3 hours for your own annual business review.
Grab a journal or Google Doc and ask:
-
What worked?
-
What didn’t?
-
What needs to change?
-
What do I want next year to look and feel like?
