If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “If I just had more time, I could finally get my business together…” then this episode is for you.
I used to believe that more time was the only way to grow my business. I thought if I could just squeeze in one more hour, work through nap time, or stay up late every night, I’d finally “make it.” But that belief left me completely burned out.
In this episode of Moms Make Money, I’m sharing the real shift that changed everything for me — and how learning to create margin helped me breathe again, think more clearly, and actually move my business forward in a sustainable way.
What Is Margin — and Why It Matters
There was a moment I’ll never forget: I was trying to edit a client’s podcast while my toddler was playing beside me and my newborn was crying in the background. I was exhausted, frustrated, and stretched so thin that I wasn’t doing anything well.
That’s when it hit me. I didn’t need more time. I needed more margin.
I like to think of margin as the white space on a page. When it’s there, you don’t really notice it. But when it’s gone? Everything feels cramped and chaotic. The same thing happens in our lives and businesses.
When we create intentional space, not just in our calendars, but in our systems, our thoughts, and our expectations, we give ourselves room to breathe, pivot, and enjoy what we’re building.
Here’s Why Margin Matters in Business
Let me break it down for you — these are the four biggest benefits I’ve experienced by building more margin into my schedule:
-
It gives you space to think strategically
Margin helps you pause, reflect, and make aligned decisions instead of constantly reacting or putting out fires. -
It breaks the hustle cycle
When your calendar is jam-packed, it’s easy to stay stuck in survival mode. Margin helps you break that pattern. -
It allows for intentional rest
Yes, rest is productive. Margin gives you the breathing room to take a walk, a nap, or simply step away and come back with fresh energy. -
It creates sustainability
Instead of going full throttle and crashing, margin helps you pace yourself so you can keep going even during busy seasons.
How I Created More Margin (And You Can Too)
Here are four practical shifts that helped me create more margin and stop running on fumes:
-
I started saying no more often
I stopped feeling like I had to say yes to every opportunity. If it doesn’t align with my priorities, it’s a no and that’s been freeing. -
I leaned into automation and batching
From batching podcast episodes to automating my emails and client onboarding, these systems have saved me hours every week. -
I built in buffer time
No more back-to-back meetings or trying to cram everything into one nap window. I give myself space between tasks to regroup. -
I ditched perfectionism
Perfection was stealing my progress. I reminded myself that “done” is better than perfect especially when it means I can stay consistent and sane.
