Let’s just say it—money feels like the last thing we’re allowed to talk about as mom entrepreneurs.
We’re expected to either be wildly successful and flaunt our six-figure months, or stay quiet and hope no one asks how things are really going. But what about the messy middle? The months where clients pay late, income dips, and you’re not paying yourself at all?
That’s the reality for so many of us. And yet, no one talks about it. Until now.
The Financial Rollercoaster We Don’t Post About
In the online business world, money talk is usually either overly inflated (“I made $50K in one week!”) or totally hidden in shame. And as moms, we’re especially conditioned to downplay our income.
We say things like:
-
“It’s just a little side hustle.”
-
“I’m not doing this for the money.”
-
“I just want to contribute a little.”
But let’s be honest—wanting to make money from your business isn’t greedy. It’s smart. It’s empowering. And frankly, it’s necessary.
Behind the Scenes of a Real Mom-Owned Business
I’ve had 10K+ months where I felt unstoppable.
I’ve also had months—especially in the last two years—where I didn’t even hit my baseline revenue goal and had to completely rework the budget. I’ve had launches flop, clients pay late, and countless moments where I questioned if I was charging enough.
And the truth is, the inconsistency is exhausting. One month you feel on top of the world, and the next, you’re refreshing Stripe and PayPal like your life depends on it.
Let’s Normalize This: Inconsistent Income is Normal
If no one’s told you this before, let me be the first: inconsistent income is totally normal—especially when you’re in the early stages of business and especially when you’re raising tiny humans at the same time.
But what isn’t normal (or sustainable) is tying your worth to your revenue. That mindset will wear you out. I know, because I’ve been there.
Learning to separate your value from your income is one of the most powerful shifts you can make as a business owner.
Let’s Talk About What We Actually Pay Ourselves
Here’s something wild: So many business owners making $5–8K/month are only paying themselves $1–2K after taxes, team expenses, tools, and everything else. And yet, we compare ourselves to the highlight reels of others without context.
That stops now.
You are not behind if your take-home pay is modest.
You are not less of a business owner because your income isn’t consistent yet.
You are not alone if your financial situation feels messy.
Let’s stop glamorizing revenue and start talking about profit. And more importantly, let’s talk about how we want money to feel in our businesses.
A New Definition of Success
So what if your goals looked like this instead?
-
Pay yourself reliably—even during slower seasons.
-
Take time off without spiraling into panic mode.
-
Say “yes” to family travel or extra childcare without guilt.
-
Build a cushion so your business doesn’t break when life gets lifey.
That’s not small thinking. That’s sustainable thinking. That’s real success.
Money doesn’t define you. But it can empower you.
You deserve to build a business that supports your life—not one that drains it.
Let’s Keep the Conversation Going
If this resonates with you, I want you to know you’re not alone. I’m here to normalize honest conversations about money—for moms, for entrepreneurs, for you.
You don’t have to hustle for scraps or settle for shame. You’re allowed to want more, and you’re allowed to build it in your own way.
If this post hit home, DM me over on Instagram @jenny.suneson, or send this to a fellow mom entrepreneur who needs a reminder that she’s not alone.
Let’s stop pretending. Let’s start talking. And let’s make money—in a way that actually feels good.
